영어작문팁_단어선택1

영어를 공부할 때 가장 잘하고 싶은 것 중 하나가 작문이다. 하지만 스피킹이 안되는 이유와 마찬가지로 작문에 있어서도 단어의 선택과 단어의 위치 배열(문법)을 들 수 있다.

1. Since capital punishment was abandoned, the crime rate has increased.

Since capital punishment was abolished, the crime rate has increased.
    사형이 폐지 되었기 때문에 범죄율이 줄어 들고 있다.

▶ abandon = give up a plan, activity or attempt to do something, without being successful

    계획과 활동을 포기하다, 어떤 것을 시도하려고 하지만 성공하지 못한다.

 abolish = remove a law, tradition or system, often by introducing a new law; do away with

    종종 새로운 법이 생김으로써 법, 전통, 시스템 등을 없애다.

 

2. It is difficult to reach abandoned places such as small country villages.

It is difficult to reach remote places such as small country villages.

    작은 마을과 같은 외진 곳에 도달하는 것은 어렵다.

▶ abandoned = left for ever by the owners or occupiers

    소유자로부터 오랫동안 버려진

    remote = far away and difficult to reach

    먼, 도달하기 어려운

 

3. These machines are destroying our ability of thinking.

   These machines are destroying our ability to think.

     이 기계들에 의해서 우리는 생각할 능력이 파괴되고 있다.

▶ ability to do sth (not of doing)

 

4. I want to improve my ability of reading.

   I want to improve my reading ability.

    나는 읽기 능력을 향상시키고 싶다.

▶ reading/writing/teaching/acting ability

 

5. One man is able to destroy the whole world.

   One man is capable of destroying the whole world.

    사람은 전세계를 파괴할 수 있다.

▶ able to do sth = If someone is able to do something, they can do it and it is not unusual or

surprising if they do it.

 그들은 그것을 할 수 있고 그것을 한데도 특별하거나 놀라운 것이 아니다.

capable of (doing) something = If someone is capable of (doing) something, they do not

usually do it, but it is possible for them to do it if they want to.

      그들은 보통 그것을 하지 않는다. 하지만 그들이 그것을 하길 원하면 가능하다.
